What is a Tag?

A Tag is a simple category name. Users can categorize their posts with any tag that they feel is appropriate.

Where does IceRocket get the tags on the Tags homepage?

The Tags come from blogs posts on the Tags homepage. Bloggers just like you have included tags and that is where we get them. Anyone can contribute.

How do I start tagging for IceRocket?
  • If your blog software supports categories and RSS/Atom (like TypePad, Movable Type, WordPress, Radio, Blogware), just use the included category system and make sure you are publishing autodiscovered RSS/Atom and we will automatically include tags with your posts! Your categories will be read as tags. For example:

    <category>[tag_name]</category>
    <dc:subject>[tag_name]</dc:subject>

The [tag_name] can be anything, but it should describe your post. Please only use tags that are relevant to what you are blogging about. You do not need to include the brackets, just the descriptive words for your post.

  • If your blog software does not support categories or you are not sure, you can still start tagging. To associate a post with an IceRocket Tag all you have to do is "tag" your post by including a link with a defined tag relationship. For example:

    <a href="http://blogs.icerocket.com/tag/[tag_name]" rel="tag">[tag_name]</a>

The [tag_name] can be anything, but it should be descriptive. Please only use tags that are relevant to the post. You do not need to include the brackets, just the descriptive keyword for your post.

Just make sure to include rel="tag".

You do not have to link to IceRocket. You can link to any URL that ends in something conforming to the tag standard. For example, these tag links would also be included on our Tags pages:

    <a href="http://apple.com/ipod" rel="tag">iPod</a>
    <a href="http://apple.com/macosx" rel="tag">maxOSX</a>

Note: Please, do not use special characters for tags, like &, ", :, etc. These characters lead to incorrect tag processing. Try to use words mainly.

Once you have posted the tagged post with some tag, there are two ways to have your post included on an IceRocket Tag page:

  • If your blog software is configured to ping IceRocket, you are finished!

  • If your blog software does not support automatic pinging, or you have not set it up yet, or you are not sure, you can ping us manually. You might also want to configure your blog software to ping us automatically so you don't have to do that every time.

Your post should appear on the page in a few minutes. Thank you for helping to build the real-time web.
